Eunorau pannier review.

First off thanks to Steve and Kelsha for staying with this. The panniers were on back order for a few months but they both stuck with it so kudos. I got them in plenty of time to use them the rest of the year after a little modification. Background: I have a 17 inch Eunorau Fat HS mid-drive with the stock fender and rear rack. Love the bike. The panniers from Eunorau were supposed to be made to fit the bike and they kinda do but there are areas that could be improved. More later. General Description: The bags are fairly roomy but with a couple of dividers inside to help keep things organized. They are lightweight and very flexible which caused some problems when riding. The bags were advertised as being waterproof and that is pretty accurate. I’ll describe what I did to test water resistance below. The bags were available in two different types of camo and I got the digital one. Doesn’t look bad but I would have preferred black or dark grey to match the bike better. The bags are big enough to hold day camping supplies for an austere overnight camping trip, or hold a few days’ worth of groceries. The reflective strips are very bright so that will increase safety for nighttime or evening riding. Installation was a snap, literally. Just attach it to the rear rack and fender frame with a couple of straps. Here is where I ran into a problem though. The bags appear to be generic and while the straps for the top are perfect the strap locations for each side don’t really match up with the rear rack and fender frame supports on my HS. You can make it work but there is a bit too much slack in the installation and you can't get rid of it. To me it seems like the problem is that the bags are not deep enough and since they are not that deep they have a tendency to go through spaces in the rear fender and rack frame and end up rubbing the wheel and or spokes. Test: On pavement the bags were fine. On dirt roads they were okay but I had to stop a couple of times on my 26 mile test ride to re-arrange the contents of the bag. When the contents shifted rearward when going over rough or washboarded road the bag had a tendency to start hitting the spokes. Off road on single track they were flat out dangerous. I took a minor spill when the bag strap got caught between the frame and the tire and stopped the bike in its tracks. I wasn’t going that fast so no damage to the bike and I only got a little road rash but I won’t use these bags again until I figure out a solution. Maybe just riveting some kydex or plastic to the wheel side of the bags might do it. That would give the bag a little stiffness. It will be interesting to experiment with different lightweight materials to see what works. I will ask Steve if I can append that modification to this review. Another good thing, I have had a set of panniers in the past on another bike where the heel on my size thirteen shoes would hit the bag. Not the case with the Eunorau bag, there was plenty of clearance. I mentioned testing water resistance up above. Nothing scientific, all I did was take a hose, switch the nozzle to shower, and spray the bags down for a few minutes. No water got inside with the flaps both fastened. It also did a good job getting rid of all the dust from the ride without harming the contents. The bags are pretty roomy but as I mentioned they could stand to be a little deeper. Conclusion: Would I buy them again, yes almost certainly, especially if they prove durable. They were very inexpensive compared to what else is out there and appear to be solidly made. All I need to do is modify the bag a bit so it doesn’t get wedged between spokes or freeze up the wheel and we will be good to go.
