This article highlights why Bakcou is one of the best brands to invest in today. It also shares why its bikes are ideal for extended off-grid adventures.

About Bakcou

Established in 2015, Bakcou has carved a niche for itself as a prominent player in the off-road e-bike market. Their mission, driven by the founders Bryan Child and Dave Andre, is clear: to provide powerful, reliable electric bikes built to handle the toughest adventures, all while minimizing impact on the environment.

Formerly known as Backcountry e-bikes, Bakcou was founded on a few basic principles. First was their love for the backcountry and the desire to access these remote areas with minimal disturbance to wildlife and their natural habitat.

Second was their desire to design and build the most durable and efficient electric bikes on the market. Their goal wasn’t to create a mountain bike conversion kit by simply adding a motor to a bicycle frame that wasn’t designed and intended to operate with one.

Instead, they designed their e-bikes around the motor and the drivetrain, with the necessary framework and durability needed to withstand the abuse and demands placed on it.

Where are Bakcou Bikes Made?

Just like many major players in the bike industry, Bakcou partners with manufacturers in China to produce their frames. While some might be apprehensive about Chinese manufacturing, Bakcou emphasizes that quality control is paramount.

They hold their partners to the highest standards and rigorously test and refine their designs to ensure exceptional quality in the final product.

1.Bakcou Mule

Bakcou Mule

Ideal For : Riders who want to explore remote hunting and fishing grounds and those who crave an ultra-durable e-bike for tackling challenging terrain.

The Bakcou Mule Jäger stands out from typical electric mountain bikes with its powerful 1000W Bafang Ultra mid-drive motor, designed to handle steep climbs and rough terrain. What sets it apart is its Rohloff 14-speed internal gear hub, which is more durable and low-maintenance than traditional external derailleurs.

The Mule’s solid, rigid frame adds to its strength and durability, making it a bit heavier but well-suited for tough off-road conditions. This combination of the robust frame and heavy-duty gearing allows the Jäger to handle demanding trails with ease.

Pros:

  • Requires less maintenance and offers a wide gear range for climbing.
  • The rigid frame, Rohloff hub, and powerful Bafang Ultra motor make the Mule Jäger extremely tough and reliable.

Cons:

  • The robust build quality comes at a price.

2.Bakcou Storm G2

Bakcou Storm G2

Ideal For:Hunters and anglers who value a comfortable ride over extensive cargo hauling.

The Bakcou Storm G2 is a full-suspension fat-tire e-MTB built for off-road comfort and performance. It features a RockShox rear shock and a 120mm front fork to handle rough terrain smoothly.

Powered by a 1000W Bafang Ultra motor and a 17.5Ah battery, it offers strong climbing power and extended range. Hydraulic disc brakes with auto motor inhibitors ensure reliable stopping, and a new gear ratio improves pedaling efficiency.

Pros:

  • Ffull-suspension design prioritizes comfort and control on technical terrain.
  • Motor delivers impressive power and efficiency.

Cons:

  • Not optimized for heavy hauling like the Mule Jäger.
  • Premium components contribute to a higher price tag

3.Bakcou Flatlander

Bakcou Flatlander

Ideal For: Hunters on a budget who primarily navigate flat to moderately challenging terrain.

The Flatlander is a value-oriented option for hunters who need to cover long distances on flat or gently rolling terrain. Bakcou equips the Flatlander with many high-end components found on their premium models, including a bulletproof aluminum alloy frame and wide, cleated pedals for added grip.

The 750W Bafang rear hub motor provides enough power for most off-road situations on flat ground, and the Maxxis Minion fat tires offer excellent traction and control. A color LCD display keeps riders informed of important metrics, and wide handlebars with locking grips enhance stability and control.

Pros:

  • Offers a good balance of affordability and power for flat-terrain hunting applications.
  • Wide handlebars, locking grips, and comfortable pedals prioritize rider comfort and control.

Cons:

  • The 750W motor might struggle on steeper inclines compared to higher-powered Bakcou models.
  • The rigid frame lacks suspension, which can be a drawback on rough terrain.

4.Bakcou Carbon Alpha

Bakcou Carbon Alpha

Ideal For:Cross-country riders who prioritize efficiency and low weight for covering long distances on varied terrain.

Built for speed and agility, the Bakcou Carbon Alpha lives up to its name with a lightweight carbon fiber frame that sheds precious pounds without sacrificing durability. The Alpha boasts a 500W Bafang M600 motor, known for its efficiency and quiet operation.

While not the most powerful motor in Bakcou's lineup, it provides ample torque for most cross-country adventures. The RockShox suspension effectively absorbs bumps and keeps the ride smooth, and the Schwalbe tires offer a good balance of traction and rolling resistance.

Unlike some Bakcou models, the Alpha features a triple-sensor system motor that eliminates the throttle for a more traditional pedaling experience.

Pros:

  • The carbon fiber frame keeps the weight low, ideal for climbing and cross-country riding.
  • The Bafang M600 motor and RockShox suspension prioritize efficiency and a comfortable ride.

Cons:

  • Compared to higher-powered Bakcou models, the 500W motor might not be ideal for very steep inclines.
  • Riders who prefer throttle control for added assist might find the triple-sensor system limiting.

5.Bakcou Scout

Bakcou Scout

Ideal For:Experienced off-road enthusiasts who prioritize a powerful and versatile e-MTB for tackling challenging terrain.

The Bakcou Scout is a full-suspension fat-tire e-MTB designed for both climbing and descending. It combines the powerful Bafang Ultra motor from the Storm with the lightweight Carbon Alpha frame for a balanced ride.

With switchable power settings (750W to 1000W continuous, 1500W peak) and a 17.5Ah battery, it handles steep inclines and long rides. The 11-speed cassette provides versatile gearing, internal cable routing keeps it sleek, and hydraulic disc brakes offer reliable stopping power.

Pros:

  • Offers impressive power for climbing and excellent handling on descents.
  • Provides a smooth ride on technical terrain.

Cons:

  • The feature-rich design might be intimidating for new riders.

What Makes Bakcou E-bikes Stand Out

In a crowded e-bike market, Bakcou carves its path with a distinct focus on off-road capability and durability. Here's what sets them apart:

The Bafang Ultra Motor

The Bafang Ultra Motor

The Bafang Ultra e-bike motor is known for its durability and power, often called the "diesel engine" of mid-drive motors. Its all-metal build and heavy-duty gears, along with an integrated torque sensor, make it highly capable and efficient. It’s also considered a "smart motor" because it uses sensors to adjust speed, cadence, shifting, braking, and torque.

Long Lasting Lithium ion Batteries

Not all e-bike batteries are created equal, and it is important to have one that excels in its composition, capacity, and efficiency. Bakcou uses only high end lithium ion cells created to hold a charge for a longer period of time. They are hand selected to create optimal torque, and greater distance, with each charge.

High End Components

It’s not only important to build a fat tire electric hunting bike around a bulletproof aluminum alloy frame, motor, and battery. It’s just as important to top it off with high-end components that allow it to perform the way you expect it to.

Bakcou uses wide handlebars and locking handle grips for a greater base of support. Their unparalleled traction and control of fat tires allow you to go where you want to go, with confidence.

Research and Development

The focus of Bakcou's research and development team was to design the most dependable, efficient, and capable e-bikes on the market. For this reason, Bakcou designs and manufactures e-bikes around the most important part of the bike, the drive train. They also use the latest, most technologically advanced motors and lithium ion batteries on the market.

Testing and Trial

Bakcou was conceived and developed by hunters and outdoorsmen who loved to get off the beaten path and access remote areas with as little impact as possible on wildlife.

Their journey of testing and trial started in 2015 with several demo e-bikes. They have now tested multiple frames and components, as well as mid-drive motors, and even dual-drive motors, on just about any type of terrain you can imagine.

Here's a table to help you compare Bakcou to other popular e-bike brands:

Choosing the Right Bakcou E-Bike for You

Bakcou's impressive lineup offers a variety of e-bikes designed to conquer different terrains and riding styles. Here's a guide to help you find the perfect Bakcou companion for your off-road adventures:

Consider Your Riding Experience

Consider Your Riding Experience

If you're a seasoned mountain biker seeking a powerful and versatile e-MTB, the Bakcou Scout or Storm G2 are excellent choices. For riders who crave the thrill of off-road adventures without the intensity of technical climbs, the Bakcou Flatlander is a great option.

Matching Terrain to Features

If your rides frequently include steep inclines and rough, technical trails, prioritize a model with a powerful motor like the Bafang Ultra found in the Scout, Storm G2, and Mule Jäger. For riders who primarily navigate flat to gently rolling terrain and prioritize comfort over raw power, the Flatlander's 750W motor is sufficient.

Budget Considerations

Bakcou’s e-bikes generally fall into the premium category due to their robust construction and high-end components. The Flatlander is likely the most affordable option, while models like the Scout and Mule Jäger will command a higher price tag.

Bakcou E-Bike Ownership

For e-bike owners and interested buyers, here's some helpful information to get you started:

Assembly and Setup

Most Bakcou e-bikes arrive partially assembled. Bakcou recommends referring to their official user manuals or detailed assembly instructions. These manuals typically include step-by-step guides with clear illustrations to facilitate the process. If you're not comfortable assembling your e-bike yourself, consider taking it to a qualified bike mechanic for assistance.

Maintenance

For optimal battery life, avoid storing your Bakcou e-bike in extreme temperatures and try to keep the battery partially charged during extended storage periods. Consult the user manual for specific charging recommendations.

Proper tire pressure is essential for safety and performance. Before each ride, inflate your tires to the recommended PSI listed on the tire sidewall.

Warranty Information

Bakcou offers a limited warranty on their e-bikes which covers defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty period starts from the date of purchase and varies depending on the specific component.

Bakcou warrants the frame of your e-bike against factory defects for as long as you own the bike, provided you register it within 45 days of purchase. The warranty on other components typically lasts for 2 years.

Conclusion

Bakcou’s 2024 e-bike lineup has something for every off-road rider. From the powerful Scout and Storm G2 for experienced mountain bikers to the affordable and comfortable Flatlander for casual riders, there’s a model for everyone.

If you crave the thrill of off-road exploration and appreciate the power and comfort that an e-bike can provide, look no further than Bakcou. With their robust construction, high-quality components, and focus on specific riding styles, Bakcou e-bikes are built to last and conquer any adventure you throw their way.

This is awesome. My wife has been waiting a year for the step-thru version of the Mule to arrive. I think it is admirable that the Bakcou guys listen to their customers and come out with new designs that meet their needs. Very well done.
