Introduction to Best Folding Electric Bikes

Folding bikes, and especially folding electric bikes, are one of the most popular forms of bikes on the market today. And for good reason. They’re portable, affordable (usually), and come in many shapes and sizes. Perfect for city life, as well as off-road adventures.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say: It can be hard to store and transport a regular bicycle, and this is a big reason folding bikes were invented in the first place. For their portability. And now, folding electric bikes are continuing the tradition and enjoying the benefits.

If you don’t have enough room in a garage, you might try hanging your electric bike from the wall or ceiling, or leaning it against a wall near the front door. But this is rarely an ideal solution, especially if you have limited space.

And forget about traveling with non-folding bikes, unless you have a good bike rack. Even then, your bike will be exposed to the elements, and it will be a prime target for thieves.

Don’t fear. In this article, we are going to go over how folding electric bikes work, which specifications are the most important to understand, and we will review my favorite models of folding electric bikes on the market today. I also hope to dispel a few myths about folding e bikes along the way.

Let's dive in.

What Exactly Is a Folding Electric Bike?

As the name suggests, a folding electric bike (e-bike, ebike or e bike) is an ebike that can be folded in half. This is made possible by the placement of a strong hinge and clasp mechanism located in the middle of the frame.

folding ebike hinge. image credit: green bike electric motion

When unfolded, the clasp holds the frame together and allows for normal riding. When you unclasp the folding mechanism, you are able to fold the bike in half, making it highly compact and portable. Some foldable electric bikes also have a hinge at the base of the tiller, which is the part of the bike where the handlebars connect. This allows for a more compact folded bike. On some models, the battery is located within the frame itself, so you need to fold the bike if you want to remove the battery for remote charging.

Folding e bikes are otherwise the same as regular electric bikes. They have mechanical gears like a conventional bike, so you can ride without the use of the motor and battery, shifting gears as needed based on the terrain and riding conditions.

But when you need a boost, the folding electric bike has a pedal assist system (PAS) that will engage the motor and help you pedal with ease. All of the folding electric bikes reviewed here also have a throttle, which will allow you to use the motor and ride with no pedaling required.

Why Get A Folding Electric Bike?

There are several benefits to owning a folding ebike. First, it makes your bike more portable than a conventional bike. Instead of using a bike rack that mounts to the back or top of your car or truck, a folded ebike can be placed in the backseat or cargo area of your vehicle. This eliminates the risk of the bike being stolen, and reduces exposure to the elements.

Because of their portability, folding electric bikes are very popular with RV campers, boat owners, and even private pilots. They are also very popular with students, who can store their bikes in an apartment, rather than leaving them outside on a common bike rack.

What Folding Ebike Specs Should Buyers Know?

Folding bicycles (non-electric) have been around for decades, and in the last few years this versatile frame style has been applied to electric bikes.

Folding e bikes are designed to fold into a compact form, facilitating transport and storage.

One myth that I want to dispel straightaway is that folding electric bikes are somehow structurally unsound or more flimsy compared to solid-frame bikes. Most modern folding electric bikes have frames made from 6061 aluminum alloy, which is a precipitation-hardened alloy containing magnesium and silicon as its major alloying elements. It has good mechanical properties and is commonly used in bike frames. The fact is that hinge and clamp found on folding electric bikes are heavy duty in construction, allowing for riders up to 300 lbs or more to ride safely without the risk of braking the frame.

When folded, the e bikes can be carried into buildings and on public transport, making them idea for urban commuters and students. Folding electric bikes are also popular for those in compact living quarters - in RVs for example - or aboard a car, boat or plane.

But before you buy a folding e bike, make sure to evaluate its component parts, and know its specifications (aka specs).

You should never ride folding electric bikes with a loose or weak clamp. If you feel like the clamp is not holding the frame together in a sturdy manner, with some wiggle or shimmying occurring while the mechanism is clamped, please check with your dealer or local bike shop.

Some folding e bike have the battery located within the frame itself, while others mount the battery on the downtube, in front or behind the seat tube, or on the rear rack.

Folding e bikes typically have shorter tires than a standard bike, which contributes to their portability. While there are some micro folders on the market with 12” and 16” tire diameters, the most common diameter for ebikes is 20”. There are also a few folding ebikes with standard 26” tires. These are all at priced at affordable price point, most under $2,000.

Tire widths vary as well, ranging from 1.75” on the narrow side to 4” on the wide side. A fat tire folding electric bike is any e-bike with 4” tires. Fat tires provide for greater traction and stability, and have the ability to float over soft surfaces such as snow and sand; they can also have their pressure adjusted, from a low of 5 psi to a high of 30 psi.

Folding e bikes often have a U-shaped bar mounted below the chainring. This guard protects the chainring from hitting the ground when the bike is folded, and acts as a “third leg”, allowing the folded bike to stand up on its wheels.

Electric Bike Folding Mechanism

Folding mechanisms vary from model to model, but typically include a heavy-duty hinge and locking clamp at the center of the frame. The hinge will be welded to the frame and built from the same material, usually chrome moly steel or 6061 aluminum alloy.

These folding e bike mechanisms are structurally sound, and can typically work with riders up to 300 lbs. You should check the specifications for each bike you review, to make sure you know the maximum weight limit.

You should never ride a bike with a loose or weak clamp. If you feel like the clamp is not holding the frame together in a sturdy manner, with some wiggle or shimmying occurring while the mechanism is clamped, please check with your dealer.

Some models require the bike to be folded to access the battery, which is integrated into the folding bike frame. After every ride, the clamp should be wiped clean of any surface moisture or debris.

E Bike Gears and Drivetrains

Sticking with the mechanical components of a folding electric bike, most ebikes come with a conventional drivetrain, which includes the chain, chainring, a rear cassette made up from a group of cogs, derailleurs, cables and shifting triggers (a lever or button).

folding electric bike gears drivetrain

While most ebikes have traditional exterior gears, there are a few that feature internally geared hubs (IGHs), which shift gears internally and do not have an external derailleur. There are also a few ebikes that feature a carbon belt drive instead of a chain, which may be paired with a IGH and allow for a grease-free transmission.

Why do bikes have gears in the first place? Well, gears are there to enable us to maintain a comfortable pedaling speed (or cadence) regardless of the gradient or terrain — something that no one single gear is capable of.

The gears on your folding ebike can be used with or without the electronics. You can ride an ebike like a conventional bike, just coasting and pedaling, and engaging the gears to suit your riding style.

When you do decide to engage the motor - by either pedal assist or with the throttle - you can continue to adjust the gears to give you the perfect amount of resistance or pressure you need to exert onto the pedals to keep moving forward.

Mechanical & Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Electric folding bikes typically come with mechanical disc brakes, although some more expensive models feature hydraulic disc brakes. With mechanical disc brakes, when you pull the brake lever, it pulls a cable which will cause the caliper to grip the rotor, providing excellent stopping power.

This is much improved over the older style V-brakes or cantilever brakes found on older or cheaper bikes. With hydraulic disc brakes, the steel cable is replaced with hydraulic fluid, which will delivery even more stopping power than a mechanical disc brake.

A feature you will find on many folding ebikes is an automatic motor cutoff, which is triggered when you pull either brake lever. This is an important safety feature, so that when you engage the disc brakes to stop, the motor will stop accelerating the bike.

hydraulic disc brake components from really good ebikes

Disc brake maintenance should be performed regularly, especially if you are riding your bike everyday. Make sure the disc brakes engage even when you only pull slightly on the lever.

If there is some slack before the disc brakes engage, then you probably need to tighten up your disc brakes a bit. With mechanical disc brakes, you can tighten the cable by twisting a screw at the point where the cable enters the brake lever housing. In the case of hydraulic disc brakes, you will need to replenish your fluid, so that the brakes are highly responsive when activated.

Folding Electric Bike Motors

All electric folding bikes will have a motor to power the bike, either by engaging the Pedal Assist System (PAS) or using the twist or thumb throttle. The motor is typically a DC brushless electric motor, which is highly efficient and long-lasting. The motor will be integrated into the rear hub, the front hub, on the bottom bracket (known as a mid-drive).

The nominal output for an ebike motor will range from 250W on sub-compact ultra portable models, up to 750W or more on some high end fat tire folding electric mountain bikes.

electric bike rear hub motor. image credit: green bike electric motion

When using the Pedal Assist System (PAS) to power the bike, you will pedal, and the motor will help you along. The higher level of PAS you set, the more power the motor will put out, and the faster you will go and the easier you will climb hills and ride against headwinds. This is true for the use of the throttle as well. The more power you demand from the motor, the more it will output.

The housing of electric bike motors is designed to keep the internal parts free of moisture or dirt, but they are by no means waterproof. Therefore, when riding your folding ebike, make to wipe off any water that may accumulate on the motor housing, and avoid soaking the motor in puddles, creeks or ocean waves.

Folding E Bike Batteries and Electronics

The battery on electric bikes is one of the most confounding components for many new ebike riders, but it really isn’t all that complicated. Just like the battery in your mobile phone, the typical ebike battery is comprised of cells with primarily lithium-ion chemistry, with specifications for voltage and amp-hour (from which you can derive watt-hour).

electric bike battery

Most electric folding bikes will have a battery and motor pair rated at either 36 volts or 48 volts. There are a few bikes with 52V systems, and beyond that you can see 72V systems used in do-it-yourself (DIY) setups. Voltage represents the electric potential difference, electric pressure or electric tension is the difference in electric potential between two points. A higher voltage rating will mean that more power can be delivered to the motor during the same increment of time.

The Amp-Hour (Ah) specification represents the storage capacity of the cells, and thus the potential riding distance or range you can expect from a full charge. Ebikes in the US typically have 10.4Ah, 11.6Ah, 14.5Ah, 17.5Ah, or even 20.0Ah or more.

But you pay for this extra capacity. Regardless of the Ah capacity of your ebike battery, the range you can expect from a single charge will be affected by a number of factors, including terrain, weather, rider and payload weight, tire inflation, and riding style. Our recommendation is to get the biggest battery you can afford, and maintain it properly to extend the life of your battery.

Many of the questions I get from customers concerns the battery. Where are they made? Are they safe? How long will they last (battery life)? Can replacement batteries be purchased? And so on…

First, let’s keep in mind that an ebike battery is made of several components. There are the battery cells themselves, often from name brand manufacturers such as Panasonic, LG, and Samsung, but also from top brands with no name recognition in the US such as TH Brand.

More important than brand name cells should be the ebike manufacturer, because they are the ones specifying the battery components and working directly with the Chinese factory.

The cells are wired together and connected to the battery management system (BMS), which is the electronic device which regulates the flow of power into and out of the network of cells. So when you plug your battery into the wall to charge, you are actually activating the BMS, which distributes that charge to 48 or more individual cells within the battery casing, cutting them off as they reach full charge and providing feedback to the charger.

Much more could be said about batteries, but this article is focused on the key component specs for your next folding electric bike.

Electric Bike Controllers

The controller is the simply the brains of your electric folding bike. The controller, usually mounted in a small box within or next to the battery case, controls all the electronics of your ebike. The sensors that monitor your speed and cadence send signals to the controller, as do the throttle and PAS control panel or display. The controller is also responsible for serving as the interface between the battery and the motor.

ebike controller

Controllers on ebikes are often no-name OEM products, and have a higher failure rate than electric batteries or motors. The good thing is that they are easily replaced by the manufacturer. This is another reason to select a high quality brand, so that you can rely on them to spec a good controller for your folding ebike.

Folding Electric Bikes Wheels & Tires

The wheels on your folding ebike are going to be like the wheels on a conventional bike, with a metal rim for mounting the tube and tire, connected by spokes or blades to the hub. The one main difference is that most ebikes will have an electric motor built directly into the wheel’s hub, whether it is in the front or rear of the bike.

spoke and blade bike rims

The wheels on an electric bike will spin on their axle just like a regular bike, and if the motor is not engaged, it will have no effect of the wheel (i.e., there is no drag effect of having a motor hub built into the wheel). It should also be noted that almost no ebikes on the market today include regenerative brakes or motors, so you will not be able to use the ebike motor as a generator to store power in the battery.

Folding electric bikes often feature 20” tires, and while the width of the tires can range from 1.75” to 4.0”, the fat tire format of 20” x 4” is widely popular. In most cases, we refer to the wheel size as the tire size, even though these two specifications are technically different. The 20" measurement is from the ground to the top of the tire (the outer diameter), with rim diameters a few inches less.

The fat knobby tires are great on dirt roads, and will cut through snow and sand better than a narrower gauge tire. Fat tires can have their pressure adjusted, from a low of 5 psi to a high of 30 psi, so you can inflate or deflate them depending on riding conditions.

What's It Like To Ride a Folding Electric Bike?

Our selection of folding bicycles will be a pleasure to ride. We've picked only the best brands available to provide you a smooth, swift and safe riding experience.

The first time you ride your folding bike you may notice it's a little different than a regular bicycle, but not much. With smaller wheels, the turning is a little more responsive. This makes it a bit easier to turn quickly if needed.

With the added convenience of folding you will find yourself riding more often and spending more time enjoying the scenery than locking your bike up outside. Small wheels don't make you any slower. Many bikes we carry have multiple gears - some as many as a road bike - and will be just as fast and good at hill climbing as a regular bicycle.

What Are The Benefits of Folding Ebikes?

As we already discussed, because of their unique design, folding ebikes are more portable than a conventional bike. Instead of using an external bike rack mounted to your car or truck, you can stow your bike in the back seat or trunk of a vehicle. Folding ebikes are extremely popular with RV campers, boat owners and private pilots.

If you live in a small home, you don’t need to hang your bike from the ceiling or lean it awkwardly against the wall. You can tuck it away in a closet or other compact location. And if you’re a commuter, you can stow your folding ebike under a desk or in other tight spaces that would be too large for a conventional bike.

Another benefit of foldable ebikes is their ease of use. Some customers are rightly concerned that it will be difficult to fold and unfold their bike. This may be true the first couple of times you try it, but once you are familiar with the clamping mechanism, and know how to position the bike during the folding and unfolding process, it couldn’t be easier.

In fact, how you position the bike and your body is important when folding and unfolding your bike. Folding ebikes can weigh up to 60 lbs, especially if they have fat tires. So you should never lean over the bike awkwardly or try to lift the folded bike without good body position awareness. You can also remove the battery before lifting, which will take about 8-10 lbs off the total weight of the ebike.

What Are The Downsides of Folding Electric Bikes?

While there are few downsides to foldable electric bikes, this ebike format is not for everyone. As noted above, most folding ebikes have 20” tires, compared to the 26” tires found on most conventional bikes.

This means the bike rides closer to the ground, and can feel smaller than a regular bike. This is ok for most riders, but if you’re a big guy over 6’ tall, you might feel like you’re riding a kid’s bike.

Folding ebikes also tend to have a shorter wheelbase, and often feature a straight handlebar mounted on a straight tiller. This affects how it feels to ride the bike, and means that the margin for error is tighter than on a conventional bike. If you turn abruptly on a 20” folder, you’re more likely to lose control than if you made the same turn on a conventional bike.

Of course, as you get to know the feel of your bike, this should not be a problem. It just means that you really need to practice riding and know the limits of your bike's performance.

My Favorite Folding Electric Bikes

As the owner of an electric bike store, people often ask me if I like folding electric bikes, and which one is my favorite. Well, let me tell you. I own several folding electric bikes, and in the section below I discuss some of my favorite models. I should note that I have never tried the Rad Power Bikes RadMini, so it is not included in this review.

Eunorau Fat Tire Folding Step-Through Ebike

One of our favorite folding ebikes is the the E-Fat-Step folding fat tire electric by from Eunorau. The E-Fat-Step features a 500W high-torque rear hub motor, which will give you good climbing ability and a zippy ride through traffic. This DC brushless motor is paired with a long-range 48V/12.5Ah lithium-ion battery. The battery is mounted directly behind the seat tube, and can be removed quickly for remote charging.

To operate the E-Fat-Step, you have several drive mode options. There is the 7-speed gear drivetrain, so it can be pedaled just like a regular bike (no drag from the motor). There is also a 5-level pedal assist system (PAS) and a thumb throttle at your disposal. This gives you great flexibility for every riding situation.

I should also mention that the brakes have an automatic motor cutoff, so when they are engaged, the motor will disengage - a great safety feature.

Fiido X Folding Electric Bike

Next in our countdown to the best folding electric bike is the Fiido X Folding Electric Bike, one of the lightest electric bikes on the market today at just 37 lbs. The Fiido X has an amazingly sleek frame design with integrated lights, and is perfect for travel.

But don't let looks fool you. The Fiido X has a powerful 350W motor in the rear hub, which is ready to assist you when pedaling up hills or against headwinds. The 3-level pedal assist system (PAS) uses a torque sensor for precise control, working seamlessly with the 7-speed Shimano drivetrain (gears).

The seat tube-integrated battery uses a unique power rail system that eliminates external cables connecting the battery to the motor, as found in earlier design iterations such as the model D11. The rails are engaged simply by locking the seat tube in place with the quick release lever. That means when you insert the seat, the same action that locks the seat at your desired height also invisibly performs the electrical connection to the battery.
